On July 2, a transformative milestone was celebrated for outdoor recreation, safety, and connectivity in Southern Nevada. The long-anticipated Red Rock Legacy Trail officially broke ground, marking the beginning of a 20-mile shared-use path that will link Summerlin to the Hualapai Trailhead along State Route 159.
From $12 Million to $100 Million
Initially backed by $12 million in federal grants, the project now boasts a total funding pool of $100 million, thanks to generous support from the Federal Lands Access Program, Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, Clark County, NDOT, the BLM, and private entities.
What the Trail Means:
-
Safer Access: With over 3 million annual visitors to Red Rock Canyon, the trail removes cyclists and runners from the perilous narrow shoulders of Route 159.
-
Recreational & Commuter Play: Connecting Summerlin and the Hualapai Trailhead across 19–20 miles, phases aim to serve both weekend explorers and daily commuters.
-
Tribute with a Purpose: Inspired by the tragic 2005 death of off-duty Metro officer and Ironman triathlete Don Albietz, this project is a fitting legacy for enhanced public safety.
Phase 1: On the Ground
-
Route: Starts at Sky Vista Drive in Summerlin, extends 1.1 miles north along Route 159 toward the Red Rock Canyon visitor sign.
-
Timeline: Groundbreaking occurred July 1–2, with completion of Phase 1 expected within a year; the full five‑phase project is forecast to take about 3 years.
-
Partners Welcomed: Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones, Congresswoman Susie Lee, the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe, Save Red Rock’s president Heather Fisher, and agency leaders marked the breakthrough alongside blessing rituals from tribal elders.
